What a day I had yesterday! We captured our first What a day I had yesterday! We captured our first bobcat of the fall season! She was a 17.5 lb adult female in great condition. Before we sedated her though, movement and rustling in the brush pile behind me, and only 10 feet away from the trap where the bobcat was, drew my attention. A moment later, a short-tailed weasel emerged! Beautifully white in its winter coat, it was tussling with a piece of deer hind. Bit by bit, the fervid weasel dislodged an entire hunk. The piece it ripped off and attempted to carry was thrice the little weasel's size, but that tenacious little guy was hell-bent on getting its prize to some cover. It would pick up the deer piece, bound two or three times, stumble, and then repeat the process. After more than five minutes, it managed to make it to a pile of downed saplings some 25 feet away. There is something so intriguing about how bold and unrelenting mustelids are. I think we can learn and be reminded about something from these critters: with determination and will, one can overcome challenges.

The falling snow made for a wonderful addition while they posed for me. Although I'm not particularly fond of red squirrels for a few reasons, including being rather obnoxious, predating upon juvenile song birds, and being one of the main predators of snowshoe hare leverets - just stick to a vegetarian diet - , I can appreciate this moment.

Climbing down head first, martens can change direction on a vertical tree trunk in the blink of an eye. This is possible because, like one of their preferred prey species, red squirrels, martens have mobile ankle joints that allow them to turn their hind feet nearly 180 degrees, to face backwards
