This week at the marten marking post, two individu

This week at the marten marking post, two individuals passed through. The first was a partially leucistic individual, and this came as quite a shock to me. While American martens (Martes Americana) can have white faces/heads in the winter, the extent to which this individual had white or blonde fur along its neck, fore limbs, back, and tail is quite unique and uncharacteristic. Also, the nose of this marten was not black but lighter, almost purple.

A few days later a second smaller marten came through. This second individual was more typically colored. Both martens sniffed the log as they passed through, seeming to focus on the scat that a marten had left two weeks ago during the period my camera trap was dead.

Based on the body size difference, and the longer and larger head of the leucistic marten, I think it's reasonable to suspect that the leucistic individual is a male and the smaller marten is a female.

A couple weeks ago, I set out to photograph a porc

A couple weeks ago, I set out to photograph a porcupine with its denning habitat in frame. To accomplish this, I set my camera trap along a regularly used trail. A particularly flat rock in the trail corridor seemed an ideal place to have a porcupine framed, with the large rocky outcrop in the background that houses two of their dens. Based on how porcupines had reacted to my previous sets, I positioned my @camtraptions PIR sensor to trigger when a subject reached the rock, guessing that a porcupine would pause upon the triggering of my camera. Finally, it was necessary to turn my camera 90° to frame a portrait shot in order to capture all of the elements I wanted into a single frame.

After a few days, I returned to the site. Awaiting me was just the photo I had in mind.

A few days before the bears, my camera trap trigge

A few days before the bears, my camera trap triggered on this male bobcat patrolling along the edge of the wetland at dusk. Multiple scats and scrapes in this area were a good indication that one or more bobcats frequented here. I also suspect that this is the same male bobcat I camera trapped just 100m away from this spot last year.

While I had not planned for this, one of my favorite elements of this image is the shadow of the bobcat's head on the bear rub tree.

Just as I was leaving for the field a few days ago

Just as I was leaving for the field a few days ago, I saw a chipmunk lounging on top of a pile of firewood. They seemed completely at ease like I had never seen before, so I thought I would try to capture the moment. As I approached and sat just 10 feet away, they were still sitting there soaking in the sun. Then, the chipmunk took a couple of big yawns and stretched. It was absolutely adorable to watch!
