Martens here in the White Mountains of New Hampshi

Martens here in the White Mountains of New Hampshire have transitioned to their beautiful winter coats. They transition from dark brown coats to this lighter color, including, sometimes, a very white head.

This individual was the smallest marten I've ever seen, by a good amount, maybe three-quarters the size of the smallest marten I had seen previously. I suspect they were a female born this spring.

A resident family of chickadees behind my cabin this morning were foraging in the leaf litter. Everyone so often, they'd pop up to a thin birch branch, survey the area, then hop back down. They were quite amusing to watch.
