Eastern chipmunk (Tamias striatus) A photo from b Eastern chipmunk (Tamias striatus)

A photo from back during my trip to NH. After spending a couple field seasons studying small mammals, and handling hundreds of chipmunks, I never thought I'd miss these seemingly impossibly loud little guys. I can't tell you the number of times I've mistaken chipmunk scurrying for some other animal. I've even heard moose move more quietly.

A pair of mountain goats are all but tiny white sp A pair of mountain goats are all but tiny white specks on the side of this massive cliff face. It seems impossible that they can survive in such a rugged terrain all year, yet this is where they are in their element. Out of reach from terrestrial predators mountain goats are able to raise their young in relative safety. However, where golden eagles still soar, mountain goats, both juveniles and adults, are preyed upon. Today though, they were content to graze and nap as I observed them from the opposite ridge.

Believe it or not, this photo is a composite of nearly 70 photos taken with my 500mm lens. For reference, the opposite ridge where they were was approximately 3/4 of a mile away from where I sat. I thought it would be interesting to give a sense of just how rugged, steep, vast, and isolated their mountainous homes are. They rarely venture into dense forest because that is where they are most likely to be ambushed by predators, such as cougar, coyote, wolf, and bear. Thus, there mountain homes can also fragment their populations, preventing genetic exchange.

As our climate warms, and the treeline pushes ever higher due to decreased snowfall, this could lead to greater fragmentation of populations that will perish over time due to a myriad of problems, including inbreeding. This is just one more reason for humans to double down on our commitments to reducing the warming of this beautiful planet.

Mother black bear and cubs in a nursery tree in Ne Mother black bear and cubs in a nursery tree in New Hampshire. Large white pines on the edges of wetlands and fields in New England are used by mother bears to put their cubs up and away, in a safe spot. I believe this was the same mother and cubs I ran into only days before. Judging by the size of the cubs, these are yearlings.

Spring in New Hampshire. When I fly out to NH this Spring in New Hampshire. When I fly out to NH this Friday, it will be exactly one year since I left the east coast and moved to Washington. I'm looking forward to spending the next week getting back in touch with the familiar landscapes and critters that helped me start my journey as a photographer, some three years ago.
