The Milky Way Erupting from Mt. Saint Helens. Thi The Milky Way Erupting from Mt. Saint Helens.

This was a cold but beautiful morning! Presently the Milky Way is visible just before sunrise at this time of year. In fact, the orange and yellow just above the mountains was indeed the very first light of the morning at right around 6am.

I'm still quite a novice when it comes to photographing, framing, and editing astro scenes, but after 4 straight hours of fiddling around editing and re-editing and re-editing those edits...😅...I came out with this, which I'm fairly pleased with!

Gray-crowned rosy-finch (Leucosticte tephrocotis) Gray-crowned rosy-finch (Leucosticte tephrocotis) in sagebrush on the cliffs along the Columbia River.

In this seemingly open and homogenous ecosystem, wildlife take advantage of every bit of cover and food to be had. This flock of maybe 10 finches were working their way along the tops of the 600-ft cliffs, seeking out the seeds of the sagebrush.

A sharp-shinned hawk came hurtling toward me with a starling in its talons. They landed only 10 feet away, so I ran back inside, grabbed my camera, and proceeded to watch the show for the next 45 min haha

More to come!

Sunset across the snowy alpine meadows of Mazama R Sunset across the snowy alpine meadows of Mazama Ridge, Mt. Rainier National Park.

Breaking trail in order to set up camp, I had the ridge all to myself over New Years Eve. The ridge was shrouded in clouds with passing snow flurries as I made up my camp. I had just finished boiling my water for the evening, when I noticed the landscape around me seemed brighter...the clouds were blowing away! Grabbing my camera and tripod in a frenzy of activity, I didn't have time to strap on my snowshoe shoes before having to run off. Sinking up to my thighs in the 7.5 ft of snow, I trudged on. Just as I reached my shooting spot, the snowy meadows, mountains, and sky opened up, casting a beautiful purple light across the already serene landscape. I knew I had to work fast, as I could already see the next wave of clouds approaching. This was the only moment Chance had given me, and I wasn't about to waste it!

Five minutes is all I had for this shot, and that is all the opportunity I needed. In fact, in the right of the scene are the exact clouds that rolled off me moments later, leaving the landscape obscured once again. This will go down in my memory for a long time as one of the most beautiful scenes I've ever been able to experience.
