You're gonna want your sound on in order to listen to a very happy black bear taking a bath and marking a tree 🐻

This vernal pool is on land protected by @squamlakesconservationsociety . This property is an important travel corridor, communication site, and resting spot used by 11 different bears in the area.

Another day, another memory to treasure for life. While trailing moose in NW Maine, my friend and I were charged by a protective mother coyote. We had inadvertently come close to her den, and she made sure we knew it!

Barking at us from a distance, she suddenly rushed through the forest towards us, stopping only 60ft away. Staring at us, there was a momentary sharing of information as our eyes locked. Having delivered her message, she sped away as quickly as she had come. Out of sight, she continued to bark for a couple minutes. My friend and I stood in amazement, then, sharing a congratulatory smile, we turned and left.

Long overdue post! These photos are of the young female fisher, F20, feasting on one of two dead turkeys I found while exploring a small cluster site of her collar GPS points, not far from a road, back in mid May. I don't know how the two turkeys died, but F20 was certainly taking advantage of this opportunity. This young female (having been born in March of 2025) was only 4.5 lbs when we captured her. It's possible that she could have killed these turkeys - I've heard second hand accounts of people seeing fishers attack turkeys - but to have killed two, being a relatively small fisher, seems odd.

I spent last evening with a pair of local loons. The pair either did not nest or did not successfully rear chicks this year, unfortunately. However, they seemed to remain tightly bonded. The pair were inseparable as they slowly drifted and quietly spoke with one another amidst the pickerel weed and sedges.
