New Hampshire Fisher Project

From September to March, I lead the research lab’s live-trapping and collaring efforts for fishers in the Lakes Region and White Mountains of New Hampshire. Using my knowledge of fisher ecology from my previous work with fishers in Oregon, California, and Minnesota, I worked independently to detect and capture fishers. This work is part of an effort to study the causes of mortality of fishers in New Hampshire.

Please remember that we should not approach every animal that we find. We need to respect wild animals and their space. In this instance, I was able to use the wind and terrain to respectfully watch this bear from a distance.
"One-Eyed Tom" Bobcats are silent, skillful hunte "One-Eyed Tom"

Bobcats are silent, skillful hunters that are keenly aware of their surroundings. This cat pauses, momentarily, on top of a beaver dam, to inspect the scent of beavers passing back and forth from their pond to the wetland below. A noise in the distance drew the bobcat's attention from the beaver slide to a disturbance in the otherwise still night air.

This property is part of a mosaic of conservation land in the #squamlake watershed that is conserved and stewarded by the @squamlakesconservationsociety and the @lakesregionconservationtrust .

While looking over some of our fisher data on my c While looking over some of our fisher data on my computer, a shape moving outside the window caught my attention. To my astonishment, it was the resident bobcat on their morning commute across my property. When I first saw them, they were only 25ft away, but by the time I grabbed my camera they were a little further up the hill. Still, I was able to make this special photo.

They seem to come through every few days to every other week, at least based on the tracks I've seen this winter. Furthermore, they often like to move across the hill in the same general area.

Mothers will give birth to up to four kits, in tree cavities of a particular size. They select trees that have a cavity just large enough for them to squeeze inside but that are too small for other animals, including male fishers, to enter.

In fact, I discovered multiple trails of this bobcat visiting this spot. From the tracks I found, it appeared that the cat had squeezed in and out of the hole before. Upon finding this location, I knew I had to try to get this particular shot.
