New Hampshire Fisher Project

From September to March, I lead the research lab’s live-trapping and collaring efforts for fishers in the Lakes Region and White Mountains of New Hampshire. Using my knowledge of fisher ecology from my previous work with fishers in Oregon, California, and Minnesota, I worked independently to detect and capture fishers. This work is part of an effort to study the causes of mortality of fishers in New Hampshire.

Lynx Snow Tracking Project

From January to March 2025, I worked as part of a team organized by Home Range Wildlife Research and the University of Washington to collect data on the movements and hunting behavior of lynx in the North Cascades of Washington.

 Coastal Marten and Fisher Project

From June to November 2024, I worked as the lead field technician for Dr. Sean Matthews’ research lab at Oregon State University. We collected hair and tracks samples of Humboldt (coastal) martens and fishers in northern California and southern Oregon.

This mother fisher of three kits recently moved dens, going from a large sugar maple (34.5 inches dbh) to the snag behind her in the photo. Fishers require mature forests for hunting and particularly denning opportunities. Large, old trees offer the best chances for cavity dependent species, like fishers, to find enough den and rest sites. These are some of the criteria female fishers use to select den sites:

- a cavity opening 2-4 inches wide by a minimum of 3 inches tall (prevents larger animals, like raccoons, from entering)
- minimum tree diameter of 14 inch, often prefer larger
- more than one potential den site within a few hundred meters of each other, sometimes within a half mile
- an area of low human activity

Taken using the silent shutter mode on a Nikon Z7ii, without flashes, and a @camtraptions PIR v4 sensor. This was intentional, in order to minimize the disturbance to her.

This pedal marking behavior is typical among otters, though with less of a spring in their step, but I have never heard or read of fishers marking in this manner. To me, this feels like a more aggressive scent marking behavior, and it leads me to wonder whether this is a territorial dispute of sorts.

This young adult bobcat, likely just about a year old, cautiously walked up my driveway and around my house this morning. Likely concerned about the resident adult bobcat and other big scary things, like people, they were noticeably more alert than the resident cat that confidently strode by my backdoor just two weeks ago. I wish this little guy or gal the best of luck!

Please remember that we should not approach every animal that we find. We need to respect wild animals and their space. In this instance, I was able to use the wind and terrain to respectfully watch this bear from a distance.
