Amidst the tangle of a marten's home, there are sp Amidst the tangle of a marten's home, there are special sites where they communicate. While nearly always solitary, martens use chemical cues, through scent marking, to communicate with their neighbors. From my experience, males mark the most, or perhaps it is easiest to identify how males are marking. It's been two weeks now since a bear last came thr It's been two weeks now since a bear last came through my camera trap. Since then, I moved my camera setup into a tree to make it more annoying for the bears to access and to try to photograph them back-rubbing. During this lull in the bear activity, a bobcat and moose passed through though. This is my first time setting my camera off the ground, and after seeing the shots of the bobcat, I think I'll play around with sets like this in the future. I like how much more the bobcat seems to be one with its surroundings. Much to learn though! This week at the marten marking post, two individu This week at the marten marking post, two individuals passed through. The first was a partially leucistic individual, and this came as quite a shock to me. While American martens (Martes Americana) can have white faces/heads in the winter, the extent to which this individual had white or blonde fur along its neck, fore limbs, back, and tail is quite unique and uncharacteristic. Also, the nose of this marten was not black but lighter, almost purple. A few days later a second smaller marten came through. This second individual was more typically colored. Both martens sniffed the log as they passed through, seeming to focus on the scat that a marten had left two weeks ago during the period my camera trap was dead. Based on the body size difference, and the longer and larger head of the leucistic marten, I think it's reasonable to suspect that the leucistic individual is a male and the smaller marten is a female. #martens #americanmarten #martes @martesgroup #martesamericana #newhampshire #newhampshirephotography #nh #whitemountains #awoodswalk #wildlifephotography #wildlife #camtraptions #cameratrapping @camtraptions
