A fisher runs along a game trail with the chicken from one of our project's hair snare boxes. My teammate rebaited this hair snare only an hour and a half before this likely female fisher rolled through.

Wow, it's astonishing to believe that fall is offi

Wow, it's astonishing to believe that fall is officially here. This time last year, I had just moved to Minnesota to work on a bobcat and fisher collaring and tracking project. That feels like ages ago somehow. Since last September, my skills and experience as a wildlife ecologist have grown significantly. I've now worked closely with fishers and martens in both Minnesota and California, including just this past week where I assisted with, filmed, and photographed ongoing Sierra Nevada marten research (sorry I can't share those photos or video). I've almost made so many connections in the mustelid research world, and wildlife research more broadly. More and more I'm finding that the people and critters make this work so worthwhile.

(This is a photo I took of an American marten I released from one of our cage traps in Minnesota. Martens were a very common, yet sometimes pesky, by-catch while we were trying to capture and collar fishers.)

I'm in love with this photo of Mother Bear and her

I'm in love with this photo of Mother Bear and her cub. The way they're turned makes it appear they're looking at each other. However, I'm almost certain she is eyeing her other cub that crossed in front of my camera just a moment before.

Without my flashes, the bears were noticeably more calm than when my camera trap with flashes photographed them last week. It's wonderful to see, and gives me food for thought about how I should approach my camera trap setups in the future. I'm very happy to see that even despite their surprise, but tolerance, from the flashes last week, they still chose to come through again.

The cub - which based off size was born this year

The cub - which based off size was born this year - seemed more bold than its mother and proceeded to cross the log without hesitation. The coloration of both bears is interesting. They aren't quite black, but they also aren't brown/cinnamon in color. They're somewhere in between.

A mother bear and cub from this year came through

A mother bear and cub from this year came through my camera trap this week. Mother bear was a little hesitant at first, but after her cub crossed the log, she crossed as well.
