These were the last shots my camera traps captured These were the last shots my camera traps captured of fishers in the Klamath National Forest. This is an adult female who passed by here 3 days after the adult male I posted earlier. This is also likely the same female who managed to avoid my camera about a week prior to her passing through this last time.

In the third photo, you can actually see the bulge of his temporalis muscles on top of his head. This is a clear indication that he is a fully grown adult male.
On a cold, frosty morning this week, I happened up On a cold, frosty morning this week, I happened upon this Pacific wren foraging amongst the leaf litter and trying to stay warm. Shivering to stay warm, the little fella gobbled up all kinds of small invertebrates. In between foraging, they would retreat back to this same leaf, seemingly hunkering down to perhaps stay a little warmer. It was adorable to watch. I hope this wee one is still doing well out there.
Fishers never cease to fascinate me. They're such Fishers never cease to fascinate me. They're such a reclusive species, and often, if you are lucky enough to see one, the encounter lasts mere seconds. With camera trapping though, I'm able to see more of their hidden lives, without disturbing them. I've been camera trapping in this watershed for the past seven weeks. During this time, I've also been running one of my project's hair snares and a project camera here as well. Despite baiting the hair snare, as is our protocol, I make a point to not camera trap around the hair snares, mostly so as not to influence critters. I think the challenge of camera trapping without bait or lure makes your results feel that much more of an accomplishment because you're capturing the unaltered behavior and lives of these animals. Through camera trapping along this stream, as well as the hair snares and track plates of the research project, I've learned that fishers can survive in much drier ecosystems than I imagined. The relatively lush drainages of the southern half of our study area are a stark contrast to the otherwise dry forests composed of tan oak, black oak, and madrone, or ponderosa pine and Douglas fir. The drainages, however, often have larger trees, more downed woody debris, and more lush vegetation. These characteristics of the drainages promote the survival of a greater diversity and quantity of small mammals, such as California ground squirrels, chipmunk species, Douglas squirrels, woodrats, voles, and mice. Additionally, the steep hillsides of the drainages provide more shade, which in turn allows for more water to remain in the streams. Both of these factors (shade and more access to water) are crucial here because summers are HOT! This summer, for example, saw 100 degree temperatures here for three months.
